As the Muslim holy month of Ramadan approaches, Nigerian Muslims are preparing for a period of fasting, prayer, and reflection. The commencement of Ramadan 2025 is expected between the evening of Friday, February 28, and Sunday, March 2, depending on the sighting of the new moon.

Islamic scholars and religious authorities across the country have urged Muslims to be vigilant and follow official moon-sighting announcements. The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, who also serves as the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), is expected to officially declare the beginning of the fast after consultations with Islamic leaders and astronomers.

In Lagos, the first fasting day is projected to be Saturday, March 1, with Suhoor (pre-dawn meal) ending at 5:49 AM and Iftar (breaking of fast) scheduled for 6:59 PM. The fasting duration will be approximately 13 hours and 10 minutes. However, variations in timing are expected across different states, particularly in northern regions such as Kano, Sokoto, and Maiduguri, where daylight hours may differ slightly.

Religious leaders have emphasized the importance of spiritual devotion during Ramadan. Sheikh Abdurrahman Ahmad, the National Missioner of Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, has called on Muslims to use the period for increased acts of charity, patience, and community service. “Ramadan is not just about abstaining from food and drink; it is about purifying the soul and drawing closer to Allah,” he said in a recent sermon.

Despite the sacred nature of the month, Nigerian businesses and government operations will continue as usual, as Ramadan is not a public holiday. However, many private organizations and government offices may adjust working hours to accommodate Muslim employees.

Security agencies have also assured the public of adequate safety measures, especially in major cities and worship centers, to ensure a peaceful observance of the fasting period. The Nigeria Police Force and other security outfits are expected to collaborate with religious bodies to maintain order during Taraweeh prayers and other congregational activities.

As Ramadan approaches, Islamic organizations have encouraged Nigerians to verify prayer and fasting times with local mosques and Islamic councils. With the official moon sighting set to take place this weekend, Muslims across the country eagerly await the announcement that will usher in the holiest month of the Islamic calendar.
