LAGOS – The renowned Islamic scholar and Mudir of Markaz Agege, Sheikh Habibullah Adam Al-Ilory, has declared Monday, March 31, 2025, as Eid al-Fitr, marking the first day of Shawwal in the Islamic calendar.

Sheikh Habibullah made the announcement during the Laylatul Qadr (Night of Majesty) program, which commenced on the night of March 26 and lasted until the early hours of March 27 at the Markaz Islamic Centre in Agege, Lagos.

According to the revered cleric, advanced astronomical calculations and technological tools used to determine the crescent moon’s visibility confirm that the fasting month of Ramadan will end on Sunday, March 30, with Eid al-Fitr to be observed the following day.

“With the help of modern technology and knowledge of astronomical calculations, it has been confirmed that the crescent moon for Shawwal will be visible by March 30, making March 31 the first of Shawwal and the day of Eid,” Sheikh Habibullah stated.

He emphasized that while traditional moon-sighting remains significant in Islam, scientific advancements have helped provide more accuracy in determining the start of new lunar months.

“The combination of traditional sighting and astronomical knowledge ensures that Muslims worldwide have a clearer understanding of the Islamic calendar. This method aligns with Islamic teachings, which encourage knowledge and precision,” he added.

Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, is one of the most significant celebrations in Islam, observed with prayers, feasting, and charity. Nigerian Muslims, like their counterparts worldwide, are expected to gather in mosques and prayer grounds for the special Eid prayers on March 31.

Sheikh Habibullah urged the Muslim faithful to use the remaining days of Ramadan for intensified prayers, charity, and spiritual reflection.

“As we approach the end of this blessed month, let us continue in the acts of worship, seeking forgiveness and giving to the less privileged. May Allah accept our fasts and grant us His mercy,” he concluded.

Muslim organizations across Nigeria are expected to align with the announcement, pending official confirmation from relevant Islamic councils.
