Nasboi; ODUMODUBLVCK, Ayo Maff and Shallipopi for Next Rated Headies 2024 Award

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

LAGOS, Nigeria – Music lovers and industry watchers are eagerly awaiting the 2024 edition of the prestigious Headies Awards, set to take place today, Sunday, April 27, 2025, with the red carpet beginning at 5:00 p.m. and the main ceremony kicking off at 8:00 p.m.

Among the most talked-about categories this year is the Next Rated Award, a coveted honour that has, over the years, become a launchpad for some of Nigeria’s biggest music stars. Past winners include industry heavyweights like Wizkid, Davido, Rema, and Tems. In addition to the award plaque, the winner will also receive a brand-new car — a tradition that underscores the significance of the category in recognizing the brightest rising talents in the Nigerian and African music scene.

Meet the Nominees

The 2024 nominees — Shallipopi, ODUMODUBLVCK, Ayo Maff, and Nasboi — represent a diverse blend of Afrobeat, Hip-hop, and street-pop sounds, reflecting the evolving dynamism of Nigerian music.

Shallipopi, born Crown Uzama on April 12, 2000, broke into the mainstream in 2023 with his smash hit “Elon Musk.” Known for his playful streetwise lyrics and catchy beats, he quickly followed up with the EP Planet Pluto and two successful studio albums: Presido La Pluto (2023) and Shakespopi (2024). His song “ASAP” topped the TurnTable Top 100, and his influence continues to grow globally under his label, Plutomania Records in partnership with Since ’93.

ODUMODUBLVCK, real name Tochukwu Gbubemi Ojogwu, born on October 19, 1993, is a rapper, singer, and songwriter renowned for his explosive stage energy, distinctive genre-fusion style, and signature Okpu Agu cap. Based in Abuja, he is a proud member of the Anti World Gangstars collective. His gritty yet melodic rap tunes have resonated with a new generation, bridging traditional Hip-hop with Afro-influenced beats.

Ayo Maff, born Ayorinde Mafoluku Ayodele on July 18, 2005, is the youngest nominee this year. He gained national attention with his hit single “Dealer,” featuring Fireboy DML, a track that dominated various music charts. His debut EP Maffian released in August 2024, further cemented his status as a rising Afrobeat sensation poised for even greater heights.

Nasboi (Nasiru Lawal) is a multitalented artist who initially gained fame as a comedian, actor, and content creator before transitioning into music. Combining humour, vibrant storytelling, and catchy melodies, Nasboi has demonstrated impressive versatility, earning a place among Nigeria’s most promising new acts.

The Headies: A Legacy of Celebrating Excellence

Founded in 2006 by Ayo Animashaun through HipTV, the Headies Awards has become one of Africa’s biggest and most influential music award ceremonies. Originally known as the Hip Hop World Awards, it was designed to recognize outstanding achievements in the Nigerian music industry, and has since expanded its reach to honour artists across the African continent and beyond.

Over the years, the Headies has set trends, shaped narratives, and been instrumental in spotlighting Nigerian talents onto the global music map. With categories that reward songwriting, production, vocals, and overall artistry, the awards serve not just as a night of glitz and glamour, but also as a barometer of the ever-evolving music landscape.

Public Excitement and Predictions

Social media platforms have been buzzing with debates and predictions as fans root for their favourites. While Shallipopi’s commercial success and growing fanbase give him a strong edge, ODUMODUBLVCK’s cultural impact and raw talent are hard to overlook. Meanwhile, Ayo Maff’s youthful appeal and Nasboi’s cross-platform versatility add even more intrigue to what promises to be a fiercely competitive race.

Many observers note that the Headies Next Rated category has often proven prophetic, with past winners going on to achieve global superstardom. This year’s winner, therefore, will not just be walking away with a car and a trophy, but likely stepping into a future filled with international opportunities.

A Night to Remember

As the industry gathers later today for a celebration of creativity, resilience, and musical excellence, all eyes will be on the Next Rated category to see who among these outstanding young artists will take the next giant leap into greatness.

Fans across Nigeria and the world can follow the live broadcast of the event, witness historic performances, and celebrate the very best of African music.
