The Headies Award, Nigeria’s most prestigious music honours, has long been known for spotlighting rising stars with the “Next Rated” category — a title that often becomes a launchpad to superstardom. Since its inception in 2006, the category has ushered a wave of new musical talents into the spotlight, from Asa to Davido, Wizkid, and more.

This year, history was made at the 17th edition of the Headies as Odumodublvck emerged the winner of the coveted Next Rated Artist award. The rapper outshined tough contenders like Shallipopi, Ayo Maff, Qing Madi, and Nasboi, marking a significant win not just for himself but for Nigerian rap music.

In fact, Odumodublvck becomes the first rapper to ever win the Next Rated category in the award’s history — a major milestone that signals a renewed appreciation for the genre in Nigeria’s evolving soundscape.

Let’s take a walk down memory lane and meet all the stars who have taken home this influential award over the years:

2006 — Asa

2007 — Overdose

2008 — Wande Coal

2009 — Omawumi

2010 — Skuki

2011 — Wizkid

2012 — Davido

2013 — Sean Tizzle

2014 — Patoranking

2015 — Reekado Banks

2016 — Mr Eazi

2018 — Mayorkun

2019 — Rema

2021 — Omah Lay

2022 — BNXN (formerly Buju)

2023 — Asake

2025 — Odumodublvck

Odumodublvck’s win is more than just a trophy — it’s a cultural statement. Known for his raw energy, street-conscious lyrics, and genre-blending style, the Abuja-based rapper has carved out a unique identity in the Nigerian music scene. With his latest accolade, he joins an elite group of artists whose careers skyrocketed after winning this title.

As the industry takes note of his rise, one thing is clear: the future of rap in Nigeria is looking very bright — and it starts with Odumodublvck.
