Omu-Aran, Kwara State – Tension flared in Omu-Aran, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, on Sunday, May 25, 2025, following a series of violent incidents involving a mob that aided the escape of a suspected drug dealer, attacked a police station, and vandalized a bank and traditional ruler’s palace.

According to a statement issued by the Kwara State Police Command, operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad (AKS) arrested a notorious drug and arms trafficking suspect identified as Azeez, also known as A-Z, at about 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. The arrest was based on credible intelligence linked to illicit arms and drug activities in the area.

However, while transporting the suspect to the station, a mob of irate youths reportedly intercepted the officers and forcibly freed the suspect. Following standard procedure, the officers tactically withdrew for a threat re-evaluation.

Shortly afterward, at about 4:30 p.m., the same group allegedly attempted to breach the perimeter fence of the police station. The attempt was repelled by police personnel.

The unrest escalated when the group reportedly proceeded to the palace of the Olomu of Omu-Aran, where they set ablaze a motorcycle belonging to the monarch’s police orderly.

In a related development, at about 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 26, another faction of youths attacked the Olomu Aperan Microfinance Bank. Armed with stones and other weapons, the mob vandalized the bank’s CCTV camera, destroyed its signboard, and damaged three vehicles parked on the premises.

Police reinforcements later arrived at the scene, dispersing the attackers and safely escorting bank staff to safety. Five suspects have been arrested in connection with the violent attacks.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, has ordered intensified patrols and surveillance in the area to prevent a recurrence of violence. The command urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement while investigations continue.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, who signed the statement, warned against the spread of false information and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to maintaining peace and protecting lives and property across the state.
