Chief Dele Momodu; President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

Washington, D.C. — Veteran journalist and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Dele Momodu, has publicly commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for intervening in the controversial sealing of the PDP National Secretariat by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike.

In a strongly worded open message shared on his social media platform from the United States, Momodu praised President Tinubu for stepping in to de-escalate what he described as “a vindictive outburst” by the FCT Minister. Wike had earlier ordered the sealing of the PDP headquarters in Abuja over alleged land-use contraventions, sparking outrage among opposition leaders and civil society groups.

“Your Excellency, good evening Sir. I have just read the news here in America that you have stepped into the matter of your cantankerous Minister of FCT, Mr. Nyesom Wike,” Momodu wrote. “The decision to stop Wike today achieved several points in your favor.”

Chief Momodu, a former presidential aspirant under the PDP, said the act of sealing the national headquarters of the main opposition party was provocative and ill-advised, especially at a time when Nigerians are grappling with economic hardship.

“While no one should condone non-compliance of government obligations, government must always restrain itself from vindictive outbursts such as that of Nigeria’s most querulous politician who I’m sure is fast becoming a liability to your government,” he stated.

The sealing of the PDP Secretariat came amid heightened political tensions in the country, with critics accusing the APC-led federal government of using state institutions to intimidate opposition parties.

However, Momodu interpreted Tinubu’s intervention as a much-needed reassertion of presidential authority. “We used to think we have two Presidents in Nigeria—TINUBU and WIKE. Now, we know WIKE has a Boss who can checkmate his excesses,” he said.

The veteran publisher also lamented Wike’s political maneuvers in Rivers State, where he has been accused of undermining the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his estranged political protégé. “How I wished you had stopped his reckless disruption and distraction of the SIM FUBARA government in Rivers State and saved the hapless people from this unfortunate contraption called emergency rule,” Momodu added.

He further drew a comparison between Wike and Minister of Works Dave Umahi, commending the latter for his humility and focus. “WIKE’s assignments are far smaller than that of Minister Dave Umahi, yet the man is so humble while WIKE subjects Nigerians to his tautological press conferences as if he’s running his own Federal Government and not under anyone’s control.”

Momodu concluded with a pointed reminder: “Sir, there can’t be two captains in one ship and I hope WIKE got that message loud and clear from your powerful intervention today.”

This dramatic political episode has reignited national conversations about federal power, the role of ministers in a democracy, and the limits of executive influence at the sub-national level.

As the political dust begins to settle, all eyes will be on the President’s next move regarding his combative FCT Minister, whose actions have frequently sparked controversy since his appointment.
