David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola

Abuja -Wednesday, July 2, 2025

In a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, prominent Nigerian opposition leaders have joined forces under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The ADC has announced former Senate President, David Mark, as its Interim National Chairman, while former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, has been appointed as the Interim National Secretary of the party.

The decision was made public on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, following a series of high-level consultations among key opposition figures. According to party sources, the coalition includes influential politicians such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi.

Aregbesola, in an acceptance letter, confirmed his readiness to serve in his new role, stating that the movement represents a national rescue mission to rebuild Nigeria’s democratic values and economy.

The opposition leaders, under the ADC platform, have vowed to unseat President Tinubu in 2027, declaring that “he must return to Lagos” after a single term in office.

With the new leadership structure and growing support from across political divides, the ADC is positioning itself as the major opposition force heading into the next election cycle. Political observers believe this could significantly reshape Nigeria’s political landscape.
