ADC chieftain pays solidarity visit to former Attorney-General, warns against political violence ahead of 2027 elections.

Ambassador Comrade Oke Babatunde, a frontline chieftain of the African Democratic Congress meets with the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Dr. Abubakar Malami (SAN) on Friday, 12 September, 2025 in Abuja

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

Abuja, Nigeria – 12 September, 2025
ABUJA — Ambassador Comrade Oke Babatunde, a frontline chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has condemned what he allegedly described as a “government-sponsored crude attack” on the convoy of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Dr. Abubakar Malami (SAN), in Kebbi State.

Speaking after a courtesy visit to Malami at his Abuja office, Oke expressed relief that the senior lawyer and ADC stalwart survived the incident, though he noted that “some degrees of injuries were still noticeable on him.”

“I paid a solidarity visit to my leader, boss, and frontline chieftain of the ADC, His Excellency Honourable Dr. Abubakar Malami, SAN, the immediate past Attorney-General and Minister of Justice of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Oke told The Merit Newspaper. “The dastardly attack on his convoy was nothing but a desperate move under the cover of the ruling party. Nigerians should stand up against this kind of intimidation.”

The Merit Newspaper reports that Malami, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, first rose to national prominence as a legal practitioner before being appointed Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice in 2015 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, a role he held for eight years. During his tenure, he played a central role in key judicial reforms and was a visible figure in major legal battles involving the Nigerian state. Following his exit from government in 2023, Malami returned to Kebbi politics, where he has since emerged as a frontline chieftain of the ADC.

The attack on his convoy, reportedly carried out in his home state, has sparked fresh concerns about political violence as the 2027 general elections draw closer.

Oke called for vigilance among Nigerians, stressing that democracy can only flourish when citizens are allowed to freely associate with political parties of their choice.

“Democracy is all about choice, and we must not all be in the same party,” he said. “For democracy to thrive, Nigerians must be allowed to freely associate with the political parties of their choice, as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Intimidation, oppression, victimisation and rascality are alien to our democracy and must be resisted by all.”

The ADC chieftain urged security agencies to ensure that Malami and other opposition figures are adequately protected, warning that violence against political opponents could undermine Nigeria’s democratic stability.
