Abuja — Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health reasons, the Presidency confirmed on Monday.

In a resignation letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the former minister said his decision to step down was necessitated by medical concerns requiring urgent attention.

Presidential spokesperson and Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed that President Tinubu has accepted Abubakar’s resignation and expressed appreciation for his “notable services to the nation.”

Abubakar, 63, served as governor of Jigawa State for two terms, from 2015 to 2023, before his appointment into the Federal Executive Council on August 21, 2023. His tenure as defence minister coincided with the administration’s intensifying focus on addressing insecurity across the country.

The Presidency also indicated that President Tinubu would communicate the nomination of Abubakar’s successor to the Senate later this week.

His departure comes at a critical moment, as President Tinubu recently declared a national security emergency and is expected to release further details on the measures to be implemented.
