ABUJA — In a political twist that has sent ripples through Nigeria’s political circles, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking yet another shift in his decades-long political journey.

The development, confirmed on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, adds a new chapter to Atiku’s ever-dynamic political career, which has seen him switch parties multiple times since his entry into national politics in the early 1990s.

Atiku began his political journey in 1992 with the Social Democratic Party (SDP) before becoming Vice President in 1999 under the PDP. In 2007, he contested for the presidency under the Action Congress (AC) before returning to the PDP in 2011. By 2015, he had joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), only to return once again to the PDP in 2019, where he ran as the party’s presidential candidate in both 2019 and 2023.

Today’s exit from the PDP has sparked fresh speculation that the former Vice President may be aligning with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as his new political base ahead of the 2027 elections.

Though Atiku has yet to make an official declaration regarding his next move, political observers believe his sights may be set on another presidential run — possibly under the ADC banner.

As Nigeria watches closely, many are asking: Is Atiku gearing up for one last political charge under a new flag? Only time will tell.
