The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Ogbagba II

Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State – July 13, 2025

Nigeria has lost one of its most revered and longest-serving traditional rulers. The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Ogbagba II, passed away on Sunday evening, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91.

The news of his death was confirmed by sources close to the royal family and widely reported by several national media outlets. The monarch reportedly died peacefully in his palace in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, following age-related complications.

Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, the same year Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule. His reign, which lasted over six decades, was marked by stability, modernization, and the cultural transformation of Ijebuland.

A Royal Legacy Rooted in History

The Merit Newspaper reports that the Awujale was a monarch of rare distinction. Educated both in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, he studied Accountancy at the Institute of Administration in the UK before returning home to ascend the throne at the youthful age of 26. His coronation heralded a new era in the traditional institution, positioning him as one of the most influential royal fathers in Yorubaland and across Nigeria.

Oba Adetona was known for his outspoken nature, courage, and unwavering commitment to the welfare of his people. He was deeply respected by both the traditional class and political elites. He maintained a cordial relationship with successive Nigerian governments while maintaining the dignity and independence of the traditional institution.

An Architect of Ijebu Development

Under his watch, Ijebuland witnessed significant social and infrastructural development. He championed numerous initiatives aimed at education, economic growth, and the preservation of cultural heritage. His visionary leadership also led to the establishment of the Oba Sikiru Adetona Professorial Chair in Governance at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, which became a leading platform for research and dialogue on traditional leadership and democratic governance.

He was also the founding figure behind the Annual Ojude Oba Festival, which grew into an internationally recognized cultural celebration attracting tourists, dignitaries, and indigenes from around the world.

National and Global Recognition

Throughout his life, Oba Adetona remained a symbol of dignity and purpose. In 2015, former President Muhammadu Buhari described him as a “fearless royal father who spoke truth to power without compromising his throne or community.” He was also awarded the national honor of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) for his immense contributions to national development and cultural preservation.

Mourning a Giant of Yoruba Heritage

As the news of his passing spread, tributes began pouring in from across Nigeria and the diaspora. Ogun State Governor, political leaders, fellow monarchs, and cultural institutions have all expressed deep sorrow over the loss of an icon.

Details regarding the burial arrangements and succession are expected to be announced soon by the Ijebu Traditional Council and the royal family.

Oba Sikiru Adetona is survived by members of the royal family, including princes and princesses, and a vast community of loyal subjects who revere his legacy.
