Mudashiru Obasa

The political crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly took a dramatic turn on Thursday as the impeached Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, stormed the assembly complex with security operatives and declared himself reinstated.

Obasa, who was removed from office on January 13, 2025, over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office, made his way into the legislative chambers accompanied by armed police officers and operatives of the State Security Service (SSS).

“I’ve resumed and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly,” Obasa told journalists and lawmakers present, effectively challenging the authority of the current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, who was sworn in after his impeachment.

Confusion Over Speakership Position

The development comes amid political tensions in Lagos, following reports that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had directed lawmakers to reinstate Obasa. This directive has sparked controversy, with some lawmakers questioning the legitimacy of such an intervention in the affairs of the state legislature.

Earlier in the day, there were reports that security operatives had withdrawn the official security details of Speaker Mojisola Meranda, further raising speculation that Obasa’s return was part of a coordinated political move.

Background to the Impeachment

Obasa’s impeachment in January was backed by 26 out of the 40 members of the House, citing allegations of financial mismanagement and executive high-handedness. However, his loyalists within the assembly have continued to resist his removal, insisting that due process was not followed.

Despite his impeachment, Obasa has maintained his influence in Lagos politics, being a long-time political ally of President Tinubu and a dominant figure within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Uncertainty Looms Over Assembly Leadership

As of press time, there was no official statement from the Lagos State House of Assembly confirming Obasa’s reinstatement. However, the unfolding events suggest that a political showdown is imminent, as lawmakers remain divided on the legitimacy of his return.

Observers say the coming days will determine the fate of the Lagos legislature, as both pro-Obasa and anti-Obasa factions brace for further political maneuvering.

The Lagos public is now watching closely to see whether the embattled former Speaker’s bold move will hold legal and political ground or if the legislative body will resist external influences in determining its leadership.
