Kwankwaso Makes Surprise Appearance at Presidential Villa for Nigeria Forest Economy Summit

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe – Abuja

In a move that surprised many political observers, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the presidential candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 general elections, was sighted at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday, where he attended the Nigeria Forest Economy Summit 2025.

The event, organized by the Presidential Committee on Economic and Financial Inclusion (PreCEFI), brought together key stakeholders in governance, environmental conservation, and sustainable development to explore economic opportunities embedded within Nigeria’s forest ecosystem.

The Merit Newspaper reports that Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and a prominent opposition leader, did not mount the podium to speak but was recognized as a special guest of honour. His presence was notable, not just for his political stature, but for the symbolism it conveyed in a climate of deepening political divides.

Sources close to the organizing committee confirmed that the summit was designed to foster dialogue and collaboration across party lines, particularly in addressing urgent environmental challenges and aligning with global sustainability goals.

Kwankwaso’s appearance at the presidential villa is his first in several months and has already sparked reactions across the political landscape, with analysts describing it as a potential softening of partisan boundaries in the interest of national development.

“This summit is about the future of our environment and our economy. We are pleased that leaders from across the political spectrum are showing interest,” said Dr. Amina Abdullahi, a senior member of the PreCEFI technical team.

Videos and photographs of Kwankwaso arriving at the venue and exchanging pleasantries with top government officials have been widely circulated on social media, fueling public discourse on the possible implications of his attendance.

The Nigeria Forest Economy Summit 2025 is part of a larger effort by the Tinubu administration to promote financial inclusion through environmental innovation and green investment. Topics discussed at the summit included afforestation initiatives, carbon credit markets, sustainable agriculture, and the integration of rural communities into the green economy.

While Kwankwaso has not issued an official statement about his participation, close allies suggest his attendance aligns with his long-standing interest in inclusive development and environmental reform.

Whether his presence at the summit signals a new political direction or a strategic collaboration with the federal government remains to be seen. However, one thing is clear: Kwankwaso’s steps into Aso Rock on Monday did not go unnoticed.
