The Lagos State House of Assembly on January 13, 2025, made headlines with the impeachment of its Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, over allegations of gross misconduct and financial misappropriation. The development, which has sent shockwaves through the state’s political landscape, has far-reaching implications for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and particularly for members representing Agege Constituency.

Obasa, who represented Agege Constituency I, was accused of abuse of office and financial irregularities. Following his impeachment, the Assembly elected Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker, making her the first female Speaker in the history of the Lagos State Assembly. The decision reflects a significant shift in the internal dynamics of the APC, raising questions about the party’s stability and future.

Political analysts believe that Obasa’s removal could tarnish the APC’s image in Lagos State. With allegations of corruption and misconduct now associated with a high-ranking member of the party, public trust in the APC may waver. The party’s leadership will need to address these concerns swiftly to mitigate any negative impact ahead of future elections.

For constituents in Agege, Obasa’s impeachment raises concerns about representation and continuity in addressing local issues. As a prominent figure in the area, his removal creates a leadership vacuum that could disrupt legislative focus on constituency-specific needs. Residents may now look to the APC to demonstrate commitment to their welfare by ensuring seamless representation during this transition.

Within the APC, Obasa’s exit has sparked a realignment of power. Meranda’s emergence as Speaker signals a possible shift in alliances, which could influence decision-making processes and legislative priorities. Party insiders suggest that the APC may seize this opportunity to strengthen its internal governance structures and rebuild public confidence.

The impeachment also presents challenges for Obasa’s supporters and associates in Agege, who now face uncertainty about their political future within the APC. This could lead to internal contests as party members in the constituency reposition themselves for relevance and influence.

Political observers note that the APC’s handling of this development will be critical to maintaining its stronghold in Lagos State. With Agege being a key constituency, the party is expected to engage in strategic repositioning, including selecting leaders who can effectively address constituents’ concerns while upholding party values.

As the dust settles, the APC must navigate the delicate balance of addressing public concerns, managing internal politics, and ensuring effective governance in Lagos State. The events surrounding Obasa’s impeachment will undoubtedly remain a pivotal moment in the state’s political history.
