Al-Imam Sheikh AbdulMumin Mutolib Oniwasi

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

Ilorin, Kwara State – May 20, 2025:
Following the solemn burial of renowned Islamic scholar, Al-Imam Sheikh AbdulMumin Mutolib Oniwasi, on Monday, May 19, in his hometown of Ilorin, Kwara State, preparations are underway for the official Fidau prayers in his honour.

The Fidau prayer, a key Islamic rite observed to seek Allah’s mercy and forgiveness for the deceased, has been scheduled to hold on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at Sheikh Oniwasi’s family residence in Idigba Oke, Ilorin. The gathering is expected to bring together scholars, students, family members, and members of the Muslim community from across Nigeria.

In a show of respect for his deep impact in Lagos, a second Fidau session will take place on Sunday, May 25, 2025, in Eti-Osa, Lagos State, where the late Sheikh spent several decades teaching, preaching, and nurturing generations of Islamic scholars through the Al-Mumin Islamic Foundation.

The information was confirmed to The Merit Newspaper by one of the cleric’s sons-in-law, Uztaz AbdulSemiu Ibrahim, who noted that both prayer sessions will be led by prominent Islamic clerics and will include Qur’anic recitations, special supplications, and reflections on the life and legacy of the late Sheikh.

“Sheikh Oniwasi was more than a father and scholar. He was a bridge between generations, a man whose humility and knowledge lit the path for many,” Uztaz AbdulSemiu said. “The Fidau prayers are not just rituals—they are an expression of our love for him and our commitment to upholding the spiritual values he lived for.”

The Fidau, which traditionally takes place on the third, seventh, or fortieth day after a Muslim’s passing, is a revered practice in Islamic tradition, especially in West Africa. It provides an opportunity for the community to collectively beseech Allah to forgive the deceased and admit them into Al-Jannat Al-Firdaus.

As preparations continue, tributes to the late scholar continue to pour in from across Nigeria and beyond, with many remembering him as a beacon of faith, knowledge, and spiritual leadership.

May Allah accept his return and grant him eternal rest in the highest ranks of Paradise.
