As the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage begins, Nigeria has made a significant mark in its early preparations and execution, successfully airlifting more than 20,000 pilgrims to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in just the first week of operations.

According to the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), a total of 20,515 Nigerian pilgrims have so far been transported aboard 50 flights, with the operation launched on May 9 in Owerri, Imo State. The inaugural flight, carrying 315 pilgrims from Imo, Abia, and Bayelsa States, was flagged off by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who urged the pilgrims to be good ambassadors of Nigeria while on the sacred journey.

This year, Nigeria is expected to send approximately 63,000 pilgrims to the holy land, with Vice President Shettima leading the national delegation.

The pace and organization of the pilgrimage so far have earned commendation from stakeholders, especially with the recent arrival of 486 pilgrims from Adamawa State, reflecting effective coordination between federal and state agencies.

In addition to smooth transportation, NAHCON has prioritized the welfare of Nigerian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia. One key area of focus is food. The commission’s Medina Feeding Committee has inspected seven catering facilities in the holy city, ensuring that over 17,000 Nigerian pilgrims currently in Madinah receive nutritious and culturally appropriate Nigerian meals. The committee emphasized that maintaining food quality and hygiene is crucial in preserving pilgrims’ health and comfort throughout the spiritual exercise.

Amid concerns raised on social media about Saudi visa restrictions for Nigerians, NAHCON has moved swiftly to clarify the situation. According to verified reports, the Saudi government has not placed any ban on Nigerian pilgrims for the 2025 Hajj. The temporary suspension that circulated online only affects new short-term visas and does not apply to individuals participating in the Hajj.

Meanwhile, the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has released the official calendar for the 1447 Islamic year, outlining key dates for the upcoming Umrah season. The move is expected to help international pilgrims—including Nigerians—plan effectively for both Hajj and Umrah obligations.

The 2025 Hajj pilgrimage continues to symbolize Nigeria’s commitment to religious freedom and its citizens’ access to global spiritual experiences. With improved logistics, heightened welfare standards, and proactive diplomacy, Nigeria is once again affirming its readiness to serve the spiritual needs of its Muslim population.

As thousands more await their turn to travel, NAHCON assures that the airlift operation will continue smoothly and without delays. The commission has reiterated its commitment to transparency, safety, and a fulfilling pilgrimage for all Nigerian participants.
