Lege Miami and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

Controversial Nollywood actor and social media personality, Adams Kehinde, popularly known as Lege Miami, has criticized Nigerians who once protested over the soaring price of rice for failing to commend the government now that the price has dropped significantly.

In a recent post on his social media platforms, Lege Miami, who refers to himself as “Ore Omo President Ilu wa”—meaning “Friend to the son of our president”—called out critics of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration who had earlier raised alarm when a 50kg bag of rice rose to nearly N95,000 in the market.

Lege, a staunch supporter of the current administration and a close associate of Seyi Tinubu, the president’s son, said:

“Bag of rice has reduced to N54,000, likewise the price of beans has also come down. Those mama and papa that were complaining when the prices were high should also speak now that the prices have dropped. We should be fair.”

The actor, who previously claimed on social media that President Tinubu had “settled Nigeria’s debt” and was committed to reducing the cost of living, said his message then was a prophecy that is now being fulfilled.

“I told you before that things will get better. President Tinubu is working hard to bring down food prices. It’s time we start showing appreciation,” he said in a follow-up video.

“If you have the energy to curse the president when things are tough, you should also clap for him when things improve,” he said.

The recent drop in food prices, particularly rice—a staple in Nigerian homes—has sparked mixed reactions. While many citizens are still skeptical, political and economic analysts aligned with Lege’s view say Nigerians should be consistent in their public discourse.

A political analyst, Dr. Lateef Odegbenle, stated:

“You can’t protest when things are bad and keep quiet when there is improvement. If we want accountability, we must also learn to give credit where it’s due.”

An economist, Mrs. Taiwo Alao, added:

“The reduction in the price of rice could be a result of several factors, including increased supply, reduced import duties, or government interventions in the agricultural sector. But citizens should at least acknowledge the positive turn.”

However, not all Nigerians are convinced. Some social media users have questioned Lege’s allegiance, calling him “the unofficial spokesperson of the presidency.” Critics argue that the recent price changes are minimal and not yet reflective of broad economic improvement.

As the debate continues, the Federal Government is yet to make an official statement about the rice price drop. Meanwhile, Lege Miami remains vocal in his campaign for what he calls “balanced criticism and due recognition.”
