Kano, Nigeria – February 24, 2025 – The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State has suspended Senator Kawu Sumaila, the lawmaker representing Kano South Senatorial District, alongside three prominent party members, over allegations of anti-party activities.

The affected members include Aliyu Sani Madakin Gini, Sani Abdullahi Rogo, and Kabiru Alhassan Rurum. According to sources within the party, their suspension was necessitated by their alleged involvement in actions deemed detrimental to the NNPP’s interests and their associations with opposition figures.

Confirming the development, an NNPP official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated that the party’s leadership had been monitoring the activities of the affected members for some time. “Their actions have been contrary to the principles of the NNPP. The party had no choice but to take disciplinary measures to ensure unity and progress,” the official said.

The suspension of these key figures has intensified the ongoing political turmoil within the NNPP in Kano State, raising concerns about the party’s stability ahead of the next electoral cycle. Political analysts argue that the move might weaken the party’s influence in Kano, a state where it previously had significant support.

Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Kano State governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has described the NNPP as a party in decline. Speaking at an APC event in April 2024, Ganduje labeled the NNPP as a “party of failed politicians,” a remark that further underscores the challenges the party is facing.

Observers suggest that the internal crisis and suspensions within the NNPP could significantly impact its ability to retain power in Kano State. The political landscape remains fluid, and it is yet to be seen how the party’s leadership will navigate these growing tensions.

Efforts to reach Senator Kawu Sumaila and the other suspended members for their reaction were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
