The Lagos State House of Assembly is facing a deepening leadership crisis following the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa over allegations of financial misappropriation and misconduct. The Assembly made history by electing Mojisola Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency I, as the first female Speaker of the Lagos legislature.

However, Meranda’s tenure has been anything but smooth, as internal opposition continues to threaten her leadership. Sources within the Assembly reveal that despite her willingness to step down, she insists that the process must take place during a formal plenary session. This has further intensified the political uncertainty gripping the state’s legislative arm.

In a shocking move, security operatives withdrew police escorts assigned to Speaker Meranda, as well as those stationed at the Assembly complex, sparking concerns over her safety. Political analysts interpret this development as a reflection of the high stakes surrounding the battle for control within the House.

Despite the turmoil, Meranda received a vote of confidence from lawmakers during a plenary session, an indication that she still enjoys support among her colleagues. Nonetheless, the crisis has drawn the attention of key political figures and security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), which has reportedly been monitoring the situation closely.

Observers say the coming days will be crucial in determining the future of the Lagos Assembly’s leadership, as negotiations and power plays continue behind closed doors. Whether Meranda retains her position or a new Speaker emerges, the unfolding drama underscores the intense political maneuvering that defines governance in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
