In a heartwarming tale of strength, determination, and generational excellence, a mother and her daughter have made headlines at the just-concluded Gateway Games 2024, winning medals for Lagos State in weightlifting at the National Sports Festival (NSF) held in Ogun State.
Ronke Olarinoye, a seasoned weightlifter, clinched gold and silver in the women’s 59kg category, reaffirming her status as one of Nigeria’s enduring talents in the sport. But what captivated spectators even more was seeing her share the spotlight with her teenage daughter, Florence Olarinoye, who also mounted the podium in the 49kg category.
Florence, despite balancing her academic obligations with her sporting ambitions, delivered a stunning performance that earned her silver medals in the highly competitive weight class. Immediately after her event, the young athlete left the camp to return to Lagos, where she is currently sitting for her West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC).
The mother-daughter duo made history not just by medaling for Lagos State, but by standing together on the national stage—a rare and powerful symbol of familial and athletic synergy.
Speaking to journalists after her victory, Ronke expressed pride in her daughter’s achievement: “I’m overwhelmed with joy. Watching Florence grow into this sport and now standing beside me on the podium is something I never imagined would happen so soon.”
