Lagos, Nigeria – June 4, 2025 — American tech billionaire and global philanthropist, Bill Gates, has been conferred with one of Nigeria’s highest national honours — the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) — by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The prestigious award was presented on Tuesday night at the Presidential Villa in Lagos, in recognition of Gates’ extraordinary contributions to global health, education, and humanitarian development across Africa, particularly Nigeria.

The honour was made public in an official statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, who described Gates as “a long-time partner of Nigeria in public health and poverty alleviation.”

President Tinubu, while presenting the CFR medal to Gates, commended the Microsoft co-founder and co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for his continued investment in Nigeria’s health, agriculture, and education sectors, and for “his deep commitment to the betterment of humanity.”

“Bill Gates’ visionary interventions in public health have saved millions of lives, especially in our fight against polio and infectious diseases,” Tinubu stated. “This national honour is Nigeria’s way of saying thank you for standing with us consistently over the years.”

Gates, whose foundation has invested over $1.5 billion in Nigeria since 2003, said he was humbled by the recognition and reiterated his belief in Nigeria’s potential to lead Africa in innovation and inclusive growth.

“Nigeria has always been a strategic partner in our work,” Gates said during his remarks. “From health to education to digital inclusion, we are committed to working with Nigerian leaders to unlock opportunities that improve lives.”

The closed-door ceremony was attended by the African richest man, Alinko Dangote.

The Merit Newspaper reported that the CFR is Nigeria’s third-highest national honour and is typically awarded to individuals who have rendered exceptional service to the nation or humanity. Gates joins a select group of distinguished Nigerians and foreigners recognised for their outstanding global impact.

Political analysts interpret this award as part of Nigeria’s renewed strategic outreach to global development influencers, especially in areas aligned with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasizes health equity, innovation, and sustainable development.

The honouring of Gates not only strengthens diplomatic and philanthropic ties but also signals Nigeria’s intention to position itself as a hub for global partnerships and leadership in Africa’s development narrative.
