Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

Kano, Nigeria – March 23, 2025 – Tensions are escalating in Kano State as the deposed Emir, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, has announced plans to conduct a separate Durbar for the upcoming Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, directly challenging the authority of Muhammadu Sanusi II, the reinstated 16th Emir of Kano. The move has raised concerns over potential unrest, with the state government and security agencies closely monitoring the situation.

Parallel Durbar Raises Security Concerns

Governor Abba Yusuf had earlier directed Emir Sanusi II to begin preparations for the grand Sallah celebrations, a major cultural and religious event in Kano. However, Emir Bayero’s insistence on holding a separate Durbar has heightened fears of a possible confrontation between supporters of the two rival traditional rulers.

Observers recall that previous attempts at holding parallel ceremonies in Kano have led to heightened tensions between political factions supporting the rival emirs. Security agencies are expected to take proactive measures to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

Legal Battles Over Emirship Intensify

The tussle over the Kano Emirship remains unresolved despite an injunction issued by the Kano State High Court about eight months ago, barring Aminu Ado Bayero and four other deposed emirs from parading themselves as traditional rulers. However, Bayero’s legal team has continued to challenge the decision.

In a fresh twist, Bayero’s counsel recently warned Emir Sanusi II against parading himself as the rightful Emir, threatening to initiate contempt proceedings against him. This legal back-and-forth has deepened the controversy and left many Kano residents uncertain about the future of their traditional leadership, with the emirship dispute now before the Supreme Court.

Security Measures and Past Clashes

Security forces have been closely monitoring the crisis and taking preventive measures. Three weeks ago, 17 individuals were arrested for allegedly attempting to forcefully evict Emir Bayero from his residence. Following the incident, authorities sealed the former Emir’s residence in the Nasarawa area of Kano to prevent potential clashes between rival factions.

The power struggle over the Kano Emirate has also reignited political divisions, with supporters of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and his predecessor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, backing different factions, deepening tensions in the state. Many believe the emirship battle is not just a traditional matter but also a reflection of deep-seated political rivalries.

What’s Next?

As the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations approach, Kano remains on edge. While Governor Abba Yusuf has thrown his weight behind Emir Sanusi II, Emir Bayero’s refusal to step aside indicates that the dispute is far from over. The key question is whether authorities can maintain peace in Kano while upholding traditions without exacerbating divisions.

Residents of the ancient city are watching closely, hoping that the age-old traditions of the Kano Emirate will not be overshadowed by prolonged political and legal battles.
