The Merit Newspaper has gathered that concerned groups and advocates of good governance have called on political leaders across all parties participating in the forthcoming 2025 Lagos State Local Government elections to ensure transparency in the selection process.
Speaking during phone interviews with The Merit Newspaper on Monday, January 13, 2025, the group leaders emphasized the need for councillorship and chairmanship aspirants to present their portfolios to party members before primary elections. They stressed that this approach would enable party members to choose credible candidates capable of representing the grassroots effectively.
The groups noted the importance of good governance in all 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), particularly now that local government autonomy has been reinforced by the federal government with legal backing.
“Transparency in the selection process is crucial. Local government autonomy gives these councils more responsibility, and we need capable leaders to manage these areas effectively,” a leader of one of the groups told The Merit Newspaper.
The groups collectively urged political leaders to prioritize competence and accountability in their candidate selection, emphasizing that the grassroots deserve leaders committed to progress and development.
