Abuja is bracing for a politically charged moment as the Supreme Court of Nigeria prepares to deliver long-awaited judgments on the leadership crises rocking two of the country’s major opposition parties—the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The apex court had, on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, reserved judgment on the disputes, including the fallout from the controversial 2025 Ibadan convention that deepened divisions within the PDP, as well as the protracted leadership tussle within the ADC.

Lawyers representing both parties have now confirmed that the court will deliver its verdicts on Thursday, April 30, 2026—decisions widely seen as capable of reshaping Nigeria’s opposition landscape ahead of future electoral contests against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Political Heavyweights Storm Abuja
As anticipation builds, Abuja has witnessed an unusual influx of political actors from across the country, heightening tension in what observers describe as an unprecedented pre-judgment atmosphere.

A source at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, who spoke on condition of anonymity, painted a vivid picture of the situation.

“Since about 4 p.m. today, nearly half of the passengers arriving in Abuja have been politicians,” the source told The Merit Newspaper. “As of 8 p.m., when I spoke with your correspondent, they were still trooping in from different states. I have never seen anything like this.”

The surge, according to insiders, reflects the high stakes attached to the court’s decisions, with factions within both parties mobilising supporters and power brokers in anticipation of outcomes that could validate or nullify existing leadership structures.

A Defining Moment for Nigeria’s Opposition
The PDP crisis, rooted in disputes over the legitimacy of its Ibadan convention, has fractured the party into rival camps, each laying claim to authentic leadership. Similarly, the ADC has been embroiled in a legal and political struggle over control of its national structure.

Political analysts warn that the Supreme Court’s rulings could either stabilise or further destabilise the opposition space.

“The implications are enormous,” a senior political analyst in Abuja noted. “These are not just internal party matters. Whoever emerges as the legitimate leadership in these parties will determine alliances, candidate selection, and ultimately the strength of opposition to the APC in future elections.”

Rising Anxiety Nationwide
Across the country, party loyalists and political observers are anxiously awaiting the judgments, with many expressing concern over the potential fallout.

Security agencies are also said to be on alert, given the possibility of protests or unrest depending on the outcomes.

What makes the moment particularly significant is the convergence of legal authority and political survival. For both the PDP and ADC, Thursday’s verdicts may not just settle leadership questions—they could redefine their relevance in Nigeria’s evolving political equation.

As Abuja fills with politicians, lobbyists, and power brokers, one thing is clear: the nation stands on edge, awaiting decisions that could alter the balance of power in Africa’s largest democracy.
