The Council of Imams and Alfas of Yorubaland has officially announced February 18 as the commencement date for the 2026 Ramadan fasting period across Yorubaland.

The declaration was made by the Mufti and Grand Chief Imam of Yorubaland, Sheikh Abdul-Azeez Ishola, following consultations and religious observations in line with Islamic traditions.

Announcing the decision, Sheikh Ishola explained that the date was arrived at after careful consideration of Islamic guidelines on moon sighting and astronomical calculations, urging Muslims to prepare spiritually for the holy month.

“After due consultations and adherence to Islamic principles guiding the commencement of Ramadan, the Council has agreed that fasting will begin on February 18,” Sheikh Ishola said. “We call on all Muslims to use this sacred period for prayers, self-discipline, charity, and peaceful coexistence.”

He further encouraged Islamic clerics to intensify teachings on unity, tolerance, and moral uprightness during the fasting period, describing Ramadan as a season for spiritual renewal and communal harmony.

The announcement received swift endorsement from Sheikh Habeeb Adam Al-Ilori, the highly respected Islamic scholar popularly known as Baba L’Agege, who described the decision as timely and consistent with Islamic jurisprudence.

“The declaration by the Mufti of Yorubaland reflects sound Islamic judgment,” Sheikh Al-Ilori stated. “Muslims should align with this guidance and prepare themselves spiritually, morally, and socially for Ramadan.”
Sheikh Al-Ilori also urged Muslims to uphold peace, avoid divisive interpretations, and remain focused on the essence of Ramadan, which he described as “a month of mercy, forgiveness, and compassion for humanity.”

The Council of Imams and Alfas of Yorubaland, a leading religious body, plays a key role in providing unified religious guidance to Muslims across the South-West and parts of Kwara and Kogi states, often helping to prevent conflicting announcements regarding major Islamic observances.

With the announcement, mosques across Yorubaland are expected to commence special Ramadan programmes, including tafsir sessions, communal prayers, and charity drives aimed at supporting the less privileged.
