The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, has announced that he has received the unanimous endorsement of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for the 2027 elections, a development that signals an early consolidation of party leadership support ahead of the electoral cycle.

Dr. Hamzat disclosed this in a statement shared on his official social media platforms on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, describing the endorsement as both “humbling and historic,” while pledging not to take the confidence reposed in him for granted.

“Today, I was honoured to receive the unanimous endorsement of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) as the official APC Governorship candidate for Lagos in the 2027 elections,” he said, adding that the backing of the party’s apex advisory body underscores a significant milestone in his political journey.

The deputy governor expressed gratitude to the Chairman of the GAC, Tajudeen Olusi, and other members of the council, noting that their trust places a weighty responsibility on his shoulders. “It is a responsibility I accept with all sense of humility,” Hamzat stated, reaffirming his commitment to public service.

He further emphasised that his focus remains on delivering good governance and accountability to Lagos residents, stressing that leadership must prioritise the welfare and aspirations of the people above political considerations.

The Merit Newspaper reports that the Governance Advisory Council, widely regarded as the highest decision-making organ within the Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress, plays a critical role in shaping party direction and endorsing key candidates, making its unanimous support a decisive factor in intra-party dynamics.

Political observers note that the endorsement could influence the trajectory of the APC’s internal processes ahead of the primaries, while also setting the stage for what may become a closely watched governorship contest in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
