When Fuji star K1 De Ultimate clashed with airport security over a flask, the uproar missed a bigger scandal — Nigerian domestic airlines often fail to provide the most basic passenger need: drinking water. Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo must fix this, or keep watching our airports turn petty disputes into national embarrassments.

Only in Nigeria can a flask of water become a national scandal. On August 5, 2025, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, Fuji music legend K1 De Ultimate found himself at the centre of a public storm, accused of breaching security rules by trying to board a ValueJet flight with a liquid-filled flask.
The authorities claimed it contained alcohol. K1 swore it was just water — prescribed by his doctor to manage chronic dehydration. The spat escalated into a six-month no-fly ban, a possible prosecution, and days of social media frenzy. But amid the noise, one uncomfortable truth has been ignored: if Nigerian domestic airlines reliably offered passengers drinking water, this saga might never have happened.
Let’s be honest — many Nigerian airlines treat basic passenger welfare as an optional extra. I have flown Max Air before, and to their credit, I was offered juice, a snack, and water on a trip to Abuja. But on other domestic flights, passengers have been left with nothing — not even a sip of water in an environment where dehydration is a real health risk.
Contrast this with international flights. Whether in Accra, Nairobi, or Johannesburg, I have never had to beg for water. Flight attendants make rounds, offering it multiple times, because they understand that passenger comfort and safety go hand in hand.

Instead of just flexing regulatory muscle on celebrities, Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo should ask himself: why is water — a human necessity — not guaranteed on every Nigerian flight? Why are airlines allowed to cut corners on something so basic?
This isn’t about defending K1’s conduct; it’s about exposing a larger failure in our aviation culture. We cannot continue to operate airlines as though passengers are mere cargo. Hydration is part of in-flight health and safety, not a luxury to be rationed.

It’s time the Ministry of Aviation issued a directive making free drinking water compulsory on every domestic flight. The cost is negligible, but the benefit — in passenger welfare, public perception, and even avoiding ugly incidents like this — is priceless.

Security is vital, but so is service. Nigerian passengers deserve both. If the government is serious about reforming our aviation sector, it should start with the basics. And nothing is more basic than water.
