MOKWA, NIGER STATE – June 5, 2025
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the immediate release of ₦2 billion and 20 trucks of rice to support victims of the recent devastating flood in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, Vice President Kashim Shettima announced during his visit to the community on Wednesday, 4 June.
Speaking while assessing the damage and commiserating with the displaced residents, Shettima said the funds and food items are part of the federal government’s emergency intervention to cushion the suffering of victims and commence the rebuilding of damaged infrastructure.
“The President has directed the release of ₦2 billion to rebuild homes that have been lost in this disaster, and 20 trucks of rice to provide immediate food relief to the affected families,” Shettima said.
He emphasized that the federal government would not abandon the people of Mokwa in their time of need, noting that additional measures are underway to rehabilitate critical infrastructure.
“President Tinubu has also mandated the urgent repair of the damaged bridges and drainage systems to forestall a recurrence. We are here not just to sympathize, but to act,” the Vice President stated.
The Merit Newspaper reports that the flood, which occurred on May 28 following days of torrential rainfall, submerged entire communities, destroyed hundreds of homes, and reportedly killed over 200 residents, while displacing more than 3,000 people. The natural disaster is among the deadliest Nigeria has experienced in recent years.
During the visit, Vice President Shettima was accompanied by Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago and officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), who are coordinating relief efforts.

Despite the government’s intervention, some victims expressed concerns about the pace and scope of the aid. “We appreciate the rice, but we need shelter. Most of us are still living in schools and open spaces,” said Hajiya Moriam Adamu, a mother of four who lost her home to the flood.
In response, Shettima assured residents that the federal government is working with the Niger State Government and development partners to ensure proper distribution and sustained support.
“This is a tragedy that touches the conscience of the nation,” he said. “We are determined to ensure that our citizens are not just helped but given a new start.”

The Vice President urged Nigerians to support flood-prone communities with donations and called on environmental and town planning agencies to implement stricter measures to prevent similar disasters.
