Sheikh Sulaimon Faruq Onikijipa

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

Ilorin, Nigeria – Sheikh Suleiman Faruq Onikijipa, the 4th Grand Mufti of Ilorin, is gaining international recognition for his contributions to Islamic scholarship and global peace efforts. Appointed in July 2021 by the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, he became the youngest person to hold this prestigious title.

Born into a family of Islamic scholars, Sheikh Onikijipa received his early Quranic education under his father, Sheikh Umar Faruq Onikijipa. He continued his studies at Darul-Ulum Eruda in Ilorin and the Arabic and Islamic Training Center, Markaz. His dedication to Islamic teachings has earned him respect both in Nigeria and abroad.

Beyond his religious leadership, Sheikh Onikijipa has been recognized internationally for his advocacy for peace and interfaith dialogue. In 2005, he was awarded a Doctorate Degree in Science and Human Services by Columbus International University, Norton, England. He also holds the title of Global Peace Ambassador from Access to Human Rights International (AHRI) and has been listed in the Cholan Book of World Records for his contributions to humanity.

In recognition of his efforts, former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari honoured him with the national title of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in October 2022. The Emir of Ilorin has praised his commitment to Islamic propagation and community development.

Sheikh Onikijipa continues to influence Islamic education and global peace discussions, making significant contributions to religious and social harmony both within Nigeria and beyond.
