Argentina produced one of the most dramatic comebacks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday, overturning a two-goal deficit to defeat Egypt 3-2, while Switzerland defeated Colombia 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw to seal the final quarter-final place.
In the day’s opening Round of 16 encounter, Egypt appeared on course for a famous victory after racing into a two-goal lead and frustrating the South American giants for much of the contest.
However, Argentina responded spectacularly as defender Cristian Romero ignited the comeback before captain Lionel Messi restored parity with a trademark finish. Midfielder Enzo Fernández completed the turnaround with a late winner, sending the Argentine supporters into wild celebrations and securing a place in the last eight.

The thrilling victory underlined Argentina’s championship pedigree and resilience, keeping alive their quest for another FIFA World Cup title.
The Merit Newspaper reports that the second match of the day was a tense and closely contested affair between Switzerland and Colombia, with neither side able to find a breakthrough despite creating several scoring opportunities during regulation time and extra time.
After 120 minutes ended in a goalless stalemate, the contest was decided by a penalty shootout, where Switzerland displayed remarkable composure to emerge 4-3 winners and claim the final quarter-final berth.
With Tuesday’s results, the quarter-final line-up is now complete. Argentina will face Switzerland, while the other quarter-final fixtures will see France take on Morocco, Spain battle Belgium, and Norway square off against England as the race for football’s biggest prize intensifies.
