Abeokuta — The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Ogun State has recorded a major leadership development as Alhaja Shakirat Idris-Arowolo has been appointed the new Vice Chairman of the party in the state and the South West Zonal Women Leader.

Idris-Arowolo officially announced her new positions on Thursday, February 12, 2026, during a telephone conversation with the Editor-in-Chief of The Merit Newspaper, a day after she marked her birthday.

The NNPP chieftain said the call became necessary to formally inform the public of her new responsibilities, noting that she is still widely known as the Ogun State Secretary of the party, a position she previously held.

According to her, the leadership changes reflect the party’s confidence in her capacity to contribute more strategically to party growth, organisation and grassroots mobilisation, both at the state and zonal levels.

Idris-Arowolo, who was the NNPP deputy governorship candidate in Ogun State during the 2023 general election, has remained a prominent figure within the party, admired for her discipline, humility and commitment to inclusive politics.

Her elevation comes barely 24 hours after she received widespread commendations from political stakeholders, including former NNPP governorship candidate and Oyo State PDP gubernatorial aspirant, Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, who described her as a principled politician and a stabilising force in public service.

As Vice Chairman of NNPP in Ogun State, Idris-Arowolo is expected to play a key role in strengthening party structures, fostering unity and supporting electoral strategies ahead of future political engagements. Her additional role as South West Zonal Women Leader positions her as a leading voice for women’s participation and representation within the party across the region.

Political observers view her emergence as a significant boost for the NNPP, particularly in advancing gender inclusion and consolidating the party’s presence in the South West.

Alhaja Shakirat Idris-Arowolo is widely regarded as one of the most influential female politicians in Ogun State, with a track record in party organisation, electoral mobilisation and grassroots advocacy. Her new appointments further underscore her rising profile within the NNPP and Nigerian politics at large.
