Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has paid a visit to former President Goodluck Jonathan, in a move that is already generating political interest across the country.

The visit, which reportedly took place in the company of some South-East stakeholders, is understood to be part of ongoing consultations among key political figures ahead of Nigeria’s evolving political landscape, particularly as discussions around the 2027 general elections begin to gather momentum.

Although details of the closed-door meeting were not fully disclosed, Obi later indicated that the engagement was in line with his continued efforts to interact with elder statesmen and critical national figures on issues affecting the country.

Political observers note that such high-level consultations are not unusual in Nigeria’s political space, especially as alliances, alignments, and strategic discussions often begin years before major elections. The meeting has therefore been interpreted in some quarters as part of a broader dialogue on national unity, governance, and future leadership direction.

The Merit Newspaper reports that this is not the first time both leaders have met in recent years. Obi has previously described Jonathan as an “elder brother and statesman,” underscoring a relationship that goes beyond partisan considerations.

While no formal political agreement or declaration has emerged from the visit, its timing and context have fueled speculations about possible collaborations or influence in shaping future political permutations.

As Nigeria gradually approaches another electoral cycle, engagements such as this are expected to continue, reflecting the dynamic and consultative nature of the country’s political process.
