The Lagos State Government has dismissed as false a report claiming that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been asked to resign on health grounds, describing the publication as misleading and unfounded. The rebuttal follows an online story by Sahara Reporters which alleged that the governor was under pressure to step aside, with his deputy set to assume office.

In a statement issued on Monday, the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, said there was no truth whatsoever in the claim, insisting that the governor remains in good health and fully in charge of the affairs of the state. He described the report as part of a recurring pattern of misinformation attributed to the platform.

Akosile stressed that Governor Sanwo-Olu continues to actively discharge his constitutional responsibilities, noting that there has been no directive or suggestion from any authority for him to resign. He added that the state government considered it necessary to respond in order to prevent confusion among residents and the general public.

Providing context to recent developments, the statement disclosed that the Deputy Governor, Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, had earlier paid a courtesy visit to the governor. During the meeting, Hamzat reportedly informed Sanwo-Olu of his intention to contest for the governorship in the future, a move officials described as routine within political circles.

According to the government, The Merit Newspaper reports that the meeting between the two leaders was cordial and aligned with established political tradition, dismissing any attempt to link it to the false resignation narrative. Observers note that political consultations and declarations of intent are common ahead of election cycles, particularly in a politically strategic state like Lagos.

The state government, however, used the opportunity to caution against the spread of unverified information, urging the public to rely on credible and official sources for updates on governance and political developments. It warned that misinformation, if left unchecked, could erode public trust and create unnecessary tension.

Reaffirming its position, the government called on Lagosians to disregard the report in its entirety, maintaining that Governor Sanwo-Olu remains firmly in office and committed to his mandate.
