The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially elected Dr. Gbemileke Alagbe, a 40-year-old banker and doctorate degree holder, as its governorship candidate for the forthcoming election in Oyo State, following a keenly contested primary that highlighted emerging shifts in political leadership within the state.

His emergence, described by party stakeholders as both competitive and decisive, signals what observers say is a growing preference for candidates with strong academic backgrounds and private-sector experience in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.

The primary election, conducted under the supervision of the African Democratic Congress, recorded a total of 21,600 votes cast across participating delegates.

Dr. Alagbe secured a commanding victory with 15,107 votes, defeating four other aspirants. Niyi Aborisade polled 4,307 votes, Adegboyega Taofeeq Adegoke scored 987 votes, Azeez Adeduntan garnered 500 votes, while Oyebisi Lukmon Ilaka received 90 votes.

The result confirmed a wide margin of support within the party structure, positioning Dr. Alagbe as the flagbearer ahead of what is expected to be a competitive governorship race.

Speaking shortly after his declaration as candidate, Dr. Alagbe described his victory as a mandate for purposeful leadership and inclusive governance.

“This is not just my victory; it is a collective decision by our party members who believe in a new direction for Oyo State,” he said. “I am committed to building a government that prioritises accountability, economic growth, and opportunities for young people.”

He further emphasized the importance of leveraging professional expertise in governance, noting that public office must be driven by competence rather than sentiment.

“Leadership today requires more than political rhetoric. It demands experience, discipline, and a clear understanding of how systems work. My background in banking and finance has prepared me for this responsibility,” he added.

Dr. Alagbe, widely referred to by supporters as “Eleniyan,” is known within professional circles for his background in banking and advanced academic training. His emergence adds to a growing trend of professionals transitioning from corporate environments into partisan politics, a development analysts say could reshape governance outcomes if sustained.

Political observers note that his candidacy introduces a fresh dynamic into the Oyo political landscape, particularly as voters increasingly evaluate candidates based on competence, track record, and policy clarity rather than political tenure alone.

Analysts further argue that his academic and professional profile may appeal to younger voters and urban electorates who are demanding reforms in economic management, infrastructure development, and public sector accountability.

As the state moves closer to the general election season, Dr. Alagbe’s candidacy is expected to intensify political engagement and broaden debates around leadership quality, governance priorities, and the future direction of Oyo State.

His victory, many within the party say, is not merely an internal party outcome but a reflection of evolving democratic expectations—where education, experience, and technocratic capacity are increasingly shaping political choice.
