As the world marks Father’s Day today, The Merit Newspaper joins millions of voices across Nigeria and the global community in celebrating fathers for their indispensable role in shaping families, communities, and the nation at large.

The annual celebration, observed every third Sunday in June, provides an opportunity to honour fathers, father figures, and guardians whose sacrifices, guidance, and leadership continue to serve as the backbone of stable households and moral upbringing.

In its goodwill message, The Merit Newspaper describes fathers as “silent pillars of strength” whose contributions often go unnoticed but remain deeply impactful in the emotional, social, and economic development of their children.

The newspaper commended fathers across Nigeria—particularly those who continue to provide for their families amid economic challenges—as well as single fathers, guardians, and mentors who have stepped into parental roles with courage and dedication.

“Fatherhood is not only about provision, but about presence, guidance, discipline, and love,” the publication noted. “In a time when society faces increasing moral and social pressures, responsible fatherhood remains one of the strongest safeguards for the future of our children.”

The Merit Newspaper also used the occasion to call on fathers to remain active participants in their children’s lives, stressing the importance of emotional availability, education support, and value-based upbringing.

It further urged governments, religious institutions, and community leaders to support initiatives that promote responsible parenting, mental health awareness among men, and family stability, noting that strong families remain the foundation of a strong nation.

Across Lagos and other parts of Nigeria, Father’s Day celebrations have been marked by church services, family gatherings, social media tributes, and community events celebrating men who have played meaningful roles in raising responsible children.

Many Nigerians took to social media to express gratitude to their fathers, sharing heartfelt messages, photos, and memories highlighting love, sacrifice, and discipline received from paternal figures.

The Merit Newspaper extends warm Father’s Day wishes to all fathers, praying for good health, wisdom, and strength to continue their noble responsibilities.

“Happy Father’s Day to every man who chooses responsibility over excuses, love over neglect, and leadership over absence,” the statement added.

As the world reflects on the essence of fatherhood, the celebration serves as a reminder that beyond titles and traditions, fathers remain vital architects of future generations—building homes, shaping destinies, and nurturing hope for society.
