The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called on politicians and their supporters to embrace peace, tolerance and responsible conduct ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Sultan made the call when he received former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, during their visit to his palace in Sokoto.
Obi and Kwankwaso, who are prominent political figures preparing for the 2027 elections, used the visit to engage the Sultan on national issues and their political activities ahead of the elections.
The Sultan urged political actors to avoid inflammatory statements, insults and actions capable of creating tension or division among Nigerians.

He said politicians had the right to present their programmes and seek the support of Nigerians, but stressed the need for such activities to be conducted peacefully and within the provisions of the law.
The Merit Newspaper reports that the monarch also urged political leaders to respect divergent political opinions and place the peace, unity and stability of Nigeria above their individual and partisan interests.

The visit comes amid increasing political consultations and realignments by political actors across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Sultan’s appeal underscores the importance of peaceful political engagement as political parties and aspirants intensify preparations for the elections.
