Nigerian journalist, Ibrahim Kegbegbe, on Hollywood films production scene in Cape Town, South Africa

On October 5, 2024, while staying at the Sun 1 Hotel in Cape Town, South Africa, I unexpectedly found myself amidst the magic of Hollywood. As a Nigerian journalist and the Head of Media and Publicity Secretary for Bullion Records, I was in Cape Town to oversee the shooting of a music video for our signed artiste, Fortune Kingsley, popularly known as GyC. However, what started as a routine day took an exciting turn when I discovered that a Hollywood film production was unfolding just outside my hotel.

The bustling intersection of Jan Smuts and Martin Hammerschlag Way in Cape Town’s Foreshore district had transformed into a vibrant film set. Trucks loaded with equipment lined the streets, massive cameras captured every angle, and a dedicated crew worked seamlessly to create cinematic magic. From the choreographed movements of actors to the precise adjustments of lighting and sound, it was clear that this was no ordinary production.

As a journalist, I was instantly captivated by the scene. My instincts kicked in, and I captured the moment with my camera, documenting the intricate details of the production. Later, I took a photo of myself in the same location, a personal keepsake of my encounter with Hollywood in action. These images, when compared, tell the story of my presence there—of how a Nigerian journalist happened upon a slice of global filmmaking.

Watching the production unfold sparked deeper reflections for me. Hollywood’s frequent choice of African locations, including Cape Town, highlights the continent’s immense natural and urban beauty as a backdrop for global storytelling. As someone deeply embedded in the African entertainment industry, I couldn’t help but wonder about the opportunities for African filmmakers to take center stage in telling our own stories.

My trip to Cape Town was already significant, as I was working closely with GyC on the music video shoot for his latest single, ‘Kpang Kpang’. Being part of such a creative project was inspiring, but witnessing a Hollywood film production added an unexpected layer to my experience. It reminded me of the shared energy and creativity that connects storytellers worldwide, whether through music or film.

Though I am yet to know the title of the movie or its release date, the memory of October 5, 2024, remains vivid. Standing at the crossroads of Jan Smuts and Martin Hammerschlag Way, camera in hand, I felt a deep sense of connection to the global creative community. It was a day that reaffirmed my belief in the power of storytelling to bridge cultures and inspire audiences worldwide.

This experience, captured in photographs and etched in memory, will remain a highlight of my journey as a Nigerian journalist committed to showcasing African talent and its place on the world stage.
