The warning, which attracted widespread attention on Thursday, October 22, 2026, prompted website administrators and hosting providers to review their systems and install available security patches.
According to security advisories, the vulnerabilities could allow hackers to execute malicious code remotely, gain unauthorised access to affected servers and potentially expose sensitive information.

Website owners who have yet to confirm that their systems are protected have been advised to contact their hosting providers or technical experts immediately to verify that the necessary security updates have been applied.
Failure to address the vulnerabilities could expose affected websites to hacking, data theft, website defacement, service disruption and possible financial losses.

However, an outdated system does not automatically mean that a website has been hacked. The actual risk depends on the PHP version, server configuration and whether effective security patches or other protections have been applied.
The PHP development team released security fixes on October 21, urging users to update immediately. WordPress has also advised website owners to check with their hosting providers, noting that the issue affects PHP itself rather than WordPress alone.
The Merit Newspaper reports that website operators are therefore encouraged to treat the warning as urgent and ensure their systems are properly secured against potential cyberattacks.
