From Watchdogs to Pet Dogs: Dr. Jide Johnson Challenges Nigerian Journalists at The Eagle Awards 2024

The Eagle Awards & Banquet 2024, held at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), Ogba, Lagos, was a day of celebration and recognition of excellence in entrepreneurship, politics, and community service. However, amidst the glitz and accolades, a profound challenge was issued to the journalism profession by the event’s Master of Ceremony, Dr. Jide Johnson, a senior lecturer at NIJ.

Dr. Johnson, while anchoring the event, raised concerns about the declining role of journalists in holding power to account. His metaphorical remarks struck a chord with the audience. “Journalists, who are traditionally regarded as watchdogs of society, have now become pet dogs. A watchdog is expected to bark at any suspicious move, but a pet dog is merely for home beautification,” Johnson stated, drawing murmurs and nods of agreement from the attendees.

A Call for Accountability

Dr. Johnson’s metaphor highlighted the urgency for Nigerian journalists to reclaim their position as defenders of truth and accountability. He noted that the growing trend of complacency and lack of investigative rigor in the media landscape undermines the critical role of journalism in democratic governance.

“At a time when the country is grappling with pressing issues—ranging from economic hardship to political instability—the media cannot afford to shy away from its responsibility. Journalists must remain fearless, objective, and unwavering in their pursuit of the truth,” he emphasized.

His critique served as a stark reminder of the media’s essential role as a check on the excesses of those in power. Johnson warned that this role is being compromised by political affiliations, financial pressures, and the erosion of professional ethics within the industry.

A Platform for Reflection and Reform

Despite the celebratory atmosphere, Dr. Johnson’s remarks shifted the focus to the urgent need for introspection within the journalism profession. As awards were handed out to individuals making tangible impacts in their fields, his words resonated as a call to action for journalists to rise above mediocrity and reclaim their status as the voice of the voiceless.

He reiterated that awards and recognitions should not only celebrate achievements but also inspire continuous improvement. “We must reflect on the essence of our roles, not just as professionals but as catalysts for societal transformation,” Johnson stated.

Moving Forward

As the media landscape evolves, the challenges facing Nigerian journalists are undeniable. The profession is at a crossroads, grappling with financial pressures and the influence of social media. Dr. Johnson’s pointed critique at The Eagle Awards 2024 serves as both a wake-up call and an opportunity for reform.

He charged the audience, particularly media practitioners, to uphold the tenets of truth, accountability, and service to society. “Journalists must reclaim their watchdog role,” he declared.

Celebrating Excellence, Motivating Good Works

While Dr. Johnson’s critique added a sobering dimension to the day, the event itself celebrated individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities. Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, the Southwest chieftain of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and CEO of Bullion Records, was honored with the Entrepreneur Per Excellence, Politician With Panache award.

Ajadi’s achievements in entrepreneurship and politics were extolled by the convener of the event, Mr. Cami Ezenwa, publisher of The Eagle News Media. “Ambassador Ajadi exemplifies dedication and excellence. His journey from a modest background to becoming a celebrated entrepreneur and political leader is truly inspiring,” Ezenwa remarked.

Similarly, Hon. Kilamuwaye Badmus received the Most Promising Political Icon, Ogun State award for his contributions to political growth and community service. Represented by Hon. Adenaya Fatai, popularly known as Modawoni, Badmus conveyed his appreciation, emphasizing his commitment to community development.

The Balance Between Celebration and Responsibility

The event underscored the critical intersection between celebrating achievements and addressing systemic issues that threaten the fabric of accountability and good governance in Nigeria. For journalists, Dr. Johnson’s words served as a poignant reminder that their role as watchdogs remains as vital as ever.

As Nigeria navigates its challenges, the call for journalists to rise to the occasion and act as catalysts for societal transformation grows louder. The Eagle Awards 2024 served not only as a platform to honor excellence but also as a moment to reflect on the profession’s evolving responsibilities.
