Ahmad Yelma’e

Supporters of popular Islamic preacher and social media critic Ahmad Yelma’e Yusuf, known by his Facebook handle Al Yeqeen Institute, have taken to online platforms to warn him about the legal implications of his controversial posts. Yelma’e, whose social media sermons are widely followed for promoting Islamic teachings, has recently faced backlash for allegedly defaming individuals while propagating his religious messages.

The controversy arose after a recent Facebook post by Yelma’e accused renowned Islamic scholar Sheikh Labeeb Agbaji of misconduct. In the post, Yelma’e wrote: “Saidi Osupa sent his son to study Islam, and Labeeb Agbaji is there destroying his Qiyaamah because of 500k.”

This statement sparked outrage among his followers, who described the post as defamatory and warned him of its potential legal consequences. Some followers expressed concern that Yelma’e’s actions could tarnish his reputation and undermine the very faith he seeks to propagate.

Followers React

Several followers criticized the post and advised Yelma’e to exercise wisdom and restraint in his online sermons.

Sulaimon Yusuf commented, “If the police arrest you, I will pray for you. But you would have already tarnished the image of the Sunnah you claim to represent.”

Taoheed Olalekan Agbaje wrote, “Yelma’e, let me advise you to handle dawah (Islamic propagation) with knowledge, wisdom, and good conduct. Learn from Saidi Osupa’s son, who has demonstrated better understanding and manners. The guy is more loaded with knowledge than you. Wahalai talai, wisdom is essential for anyone who wants to preach.”

Jimoh Oba Ridwan criticized Yelma’e for his inconsistency, saying, “The same Saidi Osupa you previously condemned to hellfire? Alaimokan, Alaileko, and Alagidi (ignorant, untrained, and stubborn person)!”

Al-Iman Soliu Olohuntosin As-Shazily questioned the rationale behind Yelma’e’s accusations, writing: “Do you know how many of Sheikh Labeeb’s children have become Islamic scholars? How is he destroying his Qiyaamah? Is it because he does not follow your sect or ideology? Your accusations lack merit.”

Akpan Aguda defended Sheikh Labeeb, stating: “Sheikh Labeeb is enlightened, kindhearted, and responsible. He would never oppose Yelma’e or anyone else. The problem lies with the 1990 Salafiyya group and their divisive ideology.”

Calls for Moderation

This incident has reignited discussions on the need for decorum and wisdom in religious propagation, especially on social media platforms. Many have urged Yelma’e to focus on promoting positive values without resorting to personal attacks or defamation.

Legal experts have also warned that defaming individuals on social media could lead to lawsuits and criminal charges under Nigeria’s cybercrime laws. If found guilty, Yelma’e could face significant penalties, including imprisonment.

As of now, neither Yelma’e nor Sheikh Labeeb Agbaji has officially responded to the controversy. However, the incident serves as a reminder of the responsibility that comes with using social media as a tool for religious teachings and public discourse.
