Governor Ademola Adeleke

Osogbo, Feb. 21, 2025 – The Osun State Local Government election scheduled for Saturday, February 22, 2025, will proceed as planned despite legal concerns and the withdrawal of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) from the contest.

Governor Ademola Adeleke reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to conducting the election, dismissing an appeal by the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, who had urged a suspension of the poll due to unresolved legal issues.

“The election will hold as scheduled, and our government is committed to ensuring a free and fair process for the people of Osun State,” Adeleke stated.

Similarly, the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) has assured the public that no court order has barred the election from taking place. The commission’s chairman reiterated that all necessary arrangements had been made to conduct a credible election across the local government areas.

Meanwhile, the APC has officially pulled out of the election, citing a recent Court of Appeal judgment that reinstated its previously sacked local government chairmen and councillors. The party argued that proceeding with the election under these circumstances would be legally untenable.

Despite these concerns, preparations for the poll remain in full swing, with OSSIEC and the state government expressing confidence in a smooth and transparent electoral process.

Observers and stakeholders are keenly watching how the situation unfolds, especially amid the legal and political tensions surrounding the election.
