DAURA, KATSINA STATE — Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Saturday led a high-powered delegation of governors’ wives and top female dignitaries on a condolence visit to former First Lady, Dr. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, at the Buhari family residence in Daura, Katsina State.

The visit comes in the wake of the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on July 13, 2025, in London, United Kingdom. He was laid to rest on July 15 in accordance with Islamic rites, in his hometown of Daura.

Mrs. Tinubu’s visit, which drew attention from both local and national observers, was marked by solemnity and solidarity. She was joined by wives of several state governors, including the First Lady of Katsina State, Hajiya Zulaihat Dikko Radda; the First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu; and others, as they paid their respects and offered prayers for the peaceful repose of the late former leader.

Speaking during the visit, Senator Tinubu described the loss as a national tragedy and expressed deep sympathy to the Buhari family. “We are here to commiserate with our dear sister and friend, Dr. Aisha Buhari, and the entire Buhari family. President Muhammadu Buhari was not just a leader, he was a statesman whose love for Nigeria was unwavering. His legacies in the areas of infrastructure, anti-corruption, and democratic governance will remain indelible,” she said.

Dr. Aisha Buhari, visibly emotional, appreciated the presence of the First Lady and her entourage, describing the visit as a show of love and sisterhood in a trying time. “My husband served this nation with all his might and sincerity of purpose. Your visit today has brought warmth and comfort to me and the family,” she remarked.

The delegation also offered prayers for the family and Nigeria’s continued unity and stability. Traditional leaders, community women, and local government officials in Daura were also present during the condolence ceremony.

Observers say the gesture by the First Lady underscores the importance of unity among Nigeria’s political and social elites during periods of national mourning. It also highlights a deepening bond among female leaders in fostering compassion and national cohesion.

The late President Buhari, a retired Major General and former military Head of State, served two terms as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. He was known for his stance on discipline, anti-corruption, and infrastructural renewal.

As tributes continue to pour in from across the globe, Nigerians reflect on his contributions to the country’s development and democracy.
