Governor Sanowo-Olu Unveils the LASU Library

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

Lagos, Nigeria – October 21, 2025

OJO, Lagos State — The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday commissioned the Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Library Complex at Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, describing the project as a testament to his administration’s enduring commitment to education, innovation, and the empowerment of the next generation of Lagosians.

The newly commissioned library complex, a state-of-the-art facility equipped with modern learning technologies, digital research tools, and interactive study spaces, is expected to transform academic engagement and research at LASU — one of Nigeria’s leading state-owned universities.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the project held a personal significance for him, as it symbolized the values that had guided his life and public service.

“This new library is a space for discovery, innovation, and inspiration. It reflects our unwavering commitment to empower young Lagosians with the knowledge and tools to shape the future,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu emphasized that education remains the cornerstone of development in Lagos State, noting that his administration has continued to invest heavily in academic infrastructure across the state’s tertiary institutions, from Lagos State University (LASU) to Lagos State Polytechnic and the University of Education (LASUED).

“This moment is deeply personal because it represents the very ideals that have shaped my journey — the belief that education is the bridge between potential and purpose, and that knowledge is the most enduring legacy any generation can bequeath to the next,” the governor added.

The governor commended the LASU management, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, for fostering a culture of academic excellence and innovation, which he said aligns with Lagos State’s vision of producing globally competitive graduates.

“I am proud of the LASU community for their dedication to learning and excellence. Together, we are building a Lagos where every mind can thrive,” Sanwo-Olu said.

“We will continue to invest in education, not as an obligation, but as a duty to our future,” Sanwo-Olu reiterated.

In her remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, described the library complex as a “monumental legacy” that will significantly enhance research, teaching, and learning within the university community. She commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for his consistent support for the institution, noting that his administration has “redefined educational development through visionary leadership.”

The Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Library Complex features over 30,000 book volumes, e-learning facilities, conference halls, and digital innovation hubs that connect students and faculty to global research databases.

Students who spoke with Merit Newspaper expressed excitement about the new facility, describing it as a “dream come true” and a “symbol of modern learning.”

One of the students, Grace Adebayo, a 300-level Mass Communication student, said:

“We’ve always wanted a library that matches international standards, and now we have it. This will motivate us to read more, research more, and dream bigger.”

The commissioning marks another milestone in the state’s T.H.E.M.E.S+ Agenda, particularly under the pillar of “Education and Technology,” which aims to strengthen academic infrastructure and digital literacy across Lagos State.

With this addition, Lagos State University joins the ranks of African universities advancing toward 21st-century educational standards — a vision Governor Sanwo-Olu said will continue to guide his administration’s policies in the education sector.
