Anambra 2025: PDP Struggles as No Aspirant Buys Governorship Nomination Form, Extends Deadline

In an unprecedented political development, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State has found itself in an unusual predicament—no aspirant purchased its governorship nomination forms before the initial deadline of March 7, 2025. This is the first time in Nigeria’s political history that a major party has failed to attract any contenders for a gubernatorial race, raising serious concerns about the party’s structure, leadership, and the broader economic reality in the country.

The situation, which many had thought impossible in Nigeria’s highly competitive political landscape, has sparked debate across the country. Is this a sign of the PDP’s dwindling influence in Anambra? Or does it reflect the crippling economic hardship affecting even the political elite?

Party Crisis or Economic Reality?

The PDP’s internal crisis appears to be a significant factor in this unexpected development. The party has been plagued by leadership disputes, particularly over the National Secretary position and unresolved issues stemming from a controversial zonal congress. With factions still at loggerheads, many political observers believe that aspirants are wary of throwing their hats into a ring clouded by uncertainty.

“Why would anyone invest ₦40 million in a ticket that might end up being invalid due to internal party wrangling?” asked a political analyst based in Anambra. “The PDP in Anambra has been deeply divided, and until they fix their house, serious contenders may stay away.”

However, some Nigerians argue that the lack of interest is a direct reflection of the worsening economic conditions in the country. With the PDP pegging its nomination and expression of interest forms at a whopping ₦40 million, even seasoned politicians appear to be hesitating. In a country where inflation is soaring and businesses are struggling, many are questioning whether the days of extravagant political spending are coming to an end.

Has Money Politics Finally Hit a Wall?

Traditionally, Nigerian politics has been synonymous with deep-pocketed aspirants willing to spend fortunes on electioneering. Yet, the PDP’s failure to attract any aspirants suggests a possible shift in political dynamics. Is the economic hardship finally biting the political elite? Or are politicians becoming more strategic about where they place their investments?

A party member who spoke anonymously said, “This isn’t just about the economy. Politicians are watching the political terrain carefully. Spending ₦40 million when the party isn’t even sure of victory is no longer a wise decision.”

PDP Extends Deadline Amid Uncertainty

Realizing the potential embarrassment and the implications of this situation, the PDP’s National Working Committee quickly extended the deadline for the purchase of nomination forms to March 10, 2025. However, the question remains—will aspirants step forward, or is this the beginning of a larger crisis for the opposition party?

As the countdown to the Anambra governorship election continues, the PDP’s inability to attract contenders raises a fundamental question: has Nigeria’s political landscape changed, or is the PDP simply losing its grip on one of its former strongholds?

The coming days will determine whether this is just a temporary setback or a sign of deeper trouble for the PDP ahead of the crucial 2025 elections.
