Abuja, Nigeria – June 2, 2025

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Friday, June 6, and Monday, June 9, 2025, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-ul-Adha celebrations.

The announcement was made on Monday by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the federal government. He urged all Muslim faithful to use the festive period to pray for the unity, peace, and progress of Nigeria.

Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most important religious celebrations in Islam. It commemorates the obedience of Prophet Ibrahim, who was willing to sacrifice his son as an act of submission to God’s command.

Muslims across the country are expected to observe special prayers and the traditional slaughtering of sacrificial animals during the period.

The declaration of a long holiday comes as Nigeria also prepares to observe Thursday, June 12, as Democracy Day—a national holiday in memory of the historic 1993 presidential election believed to have been won by Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (M.K.O.) Abiola.

With this development, Nigerians will enjoy a string of holidays in June, offering both spiritual reflection and a moment to commemorate democratic progress.
