Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari

Daura, Katsina State – The burial of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, initially scheduled for Monday, has been postponed to Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.

The postponement was confirmed by sources within the presidency and the Katsina State Government, citing logistical reasons and the need for wider state participation as the primary cause for the delay.

Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a London hospital after a prolonged illness, will be laid to rest according to Islamic rites. He was 82 years old.

The Merit Newspaper reports that in line with Islamic tradition, the burial was initially planned to take place within 24 hours of his death. However, preparations for the arrival of his body from the United Kingdom and the anticipated turnout of national and foreign dignitaries necessitated a change in schedule.

A government official, who requested anonymity due to protocol, stated: “President Tinubu has directed full national honors be accorded to the late statesman, and this involves coordination with foreign missions and dignitaries arriving for the final rites.”

Security has been tightened in Daura ahead of the funeral, with personnel from the Nigerian Army, Police, and Civil Defence already stationed in strategic locations.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, who traveled to London to accompany the body of the late president back to Nigeria, is expected to arrive in Katsina alongside senior government officials.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is also expected to attend the burial ceremony to pay his last respects to his predecessor.

The funeral prayer is scheduled to take place at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Daura Central Mosque, followed by interment at the Gidan Buhari family compound.
