Court Grants Singer Portable N1 Million Bail Over Defamation Suit Filed by Fuji Star Saheed Osupa

ILORIN, Kwara State – Controversial Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, was on Monday granted bail in the sum of one million naira by an Upper Area Court in Ilorin following his arraignment over allegations of criminal defamation, cyberstalking, inciting public disorder, and intimidation.

The court ruled that Portable must provide two sureties: one of whom must be a senior member—either the chairman or secretary—of the Performing Musicians Employers’ Association of Nigeria (PMAN), while the second must own a landed property in a Government Reserved Area (GRA) with a valid Certificate of Occupancy.

The charges stemmed from a petition filed by Fuji music veteran, Saheed Osupa, who accused the “Zazu Zeh” crooner of publicly defaming him in multiple social media videos. The artist allegedly made unguarded statements that painted the Fuji icon in bad light, thereby sparking widespread reactions and concern among fans and industry watchers.

Portable was arrested on Sunday, April 13, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, and immediately transported to Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, where the case was filed.

The presiding judge noted that the court’s decision to grant bail was based on the defendant’s constitutional right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty, as well as the need to allow him prepare his defense outside detention.

Although Portable did not speak to the press after the court proceedings, sources close to his legal team revealed that he would comply with the bail conditions as soon as possible.

The case has been adjourned for further hearing, with the court warning all parties to refrain from making inflammatory statements pending the determination of the matter.

Portable has been a polarizing figure in Nigeria’s entertainment industry since rising to fame in 2021. Known for his unconventional style and online outbursts, the artist has had multiple run-ins with the law, but continues to command a sizeable fanbase across the country.

The legal drama adds yet another layer to the singer’s controversial career, raising questions about celebrity conduct, accountability, and the growing influence of social media in Nigeria’s music landscape.
