Abuja, Nigeria — July 14, 2025

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday to honour the memory of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away recently in London after a prolonged illness.

The announcement was made on Monday by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government. He stated that the decision was approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to allow Nigerians to reflect on the legacy and contributions of the late former president.

“In recognition of the life and service of President Muhammadu Buhari, and as a mark of respect, Tuesday, July 15, 2025, is hereby declared a public holiday across the country,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo said in a statement released to the press.

The late President Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, was widely known for his anti-corruption stance and significant investments in infrastructure and security.

The Merit Newspaper reports that the government had earlier declared a seven-day national mourning period, during which all flags are being flown at half-mast nationwide.

As preparations continue for his state burial in Daura, Katsina State, the Federal Government urged citizens to use the public holiday as a moment for sober reflection and national unity.
