In the midst of Nigeria’s prevailing economic challenges, 28-year-old Abubakar Bashir, a native of Bauchi State in the northern region, has demonstrated resilience and creativity by thriving through multiple ventures in Ogun State, in the southwestern part of the country.

Bashir, a skilled artisan and entrepreneur, juggles three occupations to make ends meet. He is a tailor who repairs and alters torn clothes, a cobbler skilled in mending and polishing shoes and other leather goods, and the owner of a small shop selling household consumables, cosmetics, and other daily necessities.

In an exclusive interview with The Merit Newspaper on Saturday, 30 November, 2024 in Mowe, Ogun State, Bashir revealed how he balances his demanding work schedule while supporting his wife and three sons, who live in Bauchi State.

“Although I’m not financially buoyant, I am grateful for the little money I earn from my jobs,” he shared. “I work hard every day to make sure my family is taken care of. My income may not be much, but it is enough to meet their basic needs.”

Bashir also addressed stereotypes about people from northern Nigeria, countering the common perception that many northerners shy away from work or resort to begging.

“Some people believe we northerners, especially those of us who didn’t attend school, are lazy or dependent on begging. That’s not true,” Bashir said. “We are industrious and peace-loving people. I take pride in earning my living through honest work.”

Despite the nationwide economic hardship, Bashir believes Nigeria offers a conducive environment for entrepreneurship, provided one is innovative and diligent.

“The current economic challenges are global,” he explained. “Only creative and hardworking individuals can navigate through this tough period. Even people with white-collar jobs should consider engaging in part-time businesses to supplement their income. Nigeria is full of opportunities for those who are willing to work.”

Bashir’s story exemplifies the resilience of many Nigerians who, despite the odds, remain industrious and hopeful. His entrepreneurial journey also serves as a clarion call to youths across the country to embrace hard work and innovation as a way to overcome economic difficulties.

“Many young Nigerians are simply lazy without any genuine reason,” Bashir lamented. “We must all realize that hard work and creativity are the keys to surviving in these times.”

Bashir’s determination and adaptability serve as an inspiring example of how Nigerians can turn adversity into opportunity, reinforcing the timeless adage that hard work truly pays off.
