Apparently, Peter Obi is now the Messiah of Mathematics—a man who can lift more people out of poverty than actually exist in Nigeria. That’s what the internet wanted you to believe last week. And in the grand circus of Nigerian politics, who needs arithmetic when a lie can go viral faster than malaria in rainy season?

Only in Nigeria can a lie this ridiculous go viral without shame.

Last week, a 17-second clip flooded WhatsApp, X, and Facebook, showing Peter Obi supposedly bragging that he “pulled 439 million people out of poverty.” Never mind that Nigeria’s entire population is barely 230 million. Never mind that Anambra, where Obi governed, has fewer than 10 million people. In our politics, absurdity is not a bug—it’s the system.

And the mob loved it.

But here’s the part they don’t want you to hear: Peter Obi never said it.

According to FactCheck Nigeria, AFP, and Africa Check, the viral clip was a chopped-up deception. In the real video, Obi was referencing China’s success—how the Asian giant lifted 439 million citizens out of poverty under the UN Millennium Development Goals. It was an international example, not a personal boast.

But in Nigeria’s toxic political jungle, truth is the first casualty.

The same politicians who have looted this country blind suddenly became “poverty experts” overnight, roasting Obi for a claim he never made. They didn’t even care that the number was mathematically impossible—they cared only that the lie was useful.

And the hypocrisy is laughable.
Some of these loudest critics, including governors with poverty rates that could shame war-torn nations, are now moralising about figures. Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for instance, gleefully threw poverty statistics at Obi, claiming Anambra’s poverty rate rose under his watch—while conveniently ignoring the growing slums and widening wealth gap in his own state.

The social media echo chamber was no better. Those who pretend to “hate fake news” when it targets their camp became unpaid propaganda officers when the fabrication fit their bias. Many Nigerians are now happy to be slaves to their political tribes—truth be damned.

Here’s the uncomfortable reality: poverty in Nigeria is not just about empty stomachs; it’s about empty integrity. A people who cheer a lie because it wounds their opponent are no better than the corrupt politicians they claim to despise.

Peter Obi’s record should be debated with facts—yes, interrogate the numbers, challenge his policies, ask the hard questions. But if you have to slice and twist a man’s words to win an argument, you’ve already lost it.

The viral 439 million lie is not just an attack on Obi—it’s a warning sign that Nigerian politics is drowning in a sea of propaganda, and too many citizens are happily paddling along.

If this is the level of our political conversation in 2025, then forget lifting millions out of poverty. The real poverty—the one that will destroy us—is the poverty of truth. And last week, Nigeria proved it is still dirt poor.
